語学を学ぶということは、文法やボキャブラリー以上のものがあります。つまりその文化の人々がどう考え、どう振る舞うのかを理解することです。これは、文化について書かれている書籍や文学に触れることによって高めることができます。また基本的な歴史に親しんでおく必要もあるでしょう。

外国語でディスカッションするためには、もう一つ上のレベルがあります。それは人間性や、世界を形づくり、多くの文化で共通している概念や信念についての理解です。大切で、正当で、善良で美しい、人間の価値あるもののすべては思想に由来します。そのため、そういった重要な思想を外国語で話し合えるということは大切なのです。

アリストテレス、デカルト、ダーウィン、ニュートン、ラザフォード、フロイト、パストゥールなどの見解は、なぜ重要なのか？　そしてそれらは私たちの住む世界をどのように作り上げたのか？　人間性とは？　芸術や宗教の起源は何なのか？　これらを本書では、宗教、科学、哲学、政治、経済、（人や社会の）歴史、芸術と文学に分け、それぞれの主な思想を簡単に説明しています。そして、これらの思想を話題にした知的な会話が英語でできるように、必要なキー・ボキャブラリーを加えています。

There is more to learning a language than grammar and vocabulary. You also need to understand how people from other cultures think and behave. You can achieve this by reading books about the culture, as well as the literature of its people, and you should also be familiar with the basic history of the culture.

There is also another level about which you should be able to discuss in a foreign language. That is the concepts and beliefs that have shaped humanity and our world and which are common across many cultures. All of the things which humans value as important, just, right and beautiful come from ideas. It is important, therefore, that you can discuss these important ideas in a foreign language.

Why are the ideas of Aristotle, Descartes, Darwin, Newton, Rutherford, Freud, Pasteur et al so important? How have they shaped the world in which we live? What is human nature? What are the origins of art and religion? In my book, I briefly explain the main ideas of religion, science, philosophy, politics, economics, history (people & society) and art & literature. I give all the key vocabulary necessary for you to have an intelligent conversation about these ideas in English.

The more we understand these ideas, the more we will be able to understand ourselves, each other and the world in which we live.? I hope my book will enable you to take your English speaking ability to a much higher and exciting level.
